What is LEO Satellite?

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites orbit at 500-1,200km altitude—roughly 30 times closer to Earth than traditional geostationary satellites. This proximity dramatically reduces signal travel time, delivering latency as low as 20-50ms compared to 550-700ms for GEO satellites.

LEO constellations comprise hundreds or thousands of satellites in coordinated orbital planes. As satellites move across the sky (a single satellite is overhead for just 10-15 minutes), the system seamlessly hands off connections between satellites, maintaining continuous connectivity.

The result: satellite connectivity with performance characteristics approaching terrestrial networks, available anywhere with a view of the sky.

    FAQ

    Frequently asked questions answered

    What is LEO satellite?

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites orbit at 500-1,200km altitude—much closer than traditional geostationary satellites. This proximity reduces signal travel time, delivering latency as low as 20-50ms compared to 550-700ms for GEO.

What speeds can LEO satellite achieve?

Current LEO constellations deliver download speeds of 50-350 Mbps and upload speeds of 10-40 Mbps. These speeds support video conferencing, cloud applications, and real-time collaboration.

    Is LEO satellite reliable?

LEO delivers excellent performance but can be affected by obstructions (trees, structures) and severe weather. For mission-critical applications, Orion recommends combining LEO with GEO backup in an OpsSure multi-path solution.
